Hi, my name is Miriam! I graduated suma cum laude with a Bachelor's degree in biology from Brandeis University and earned a PhD in Neuroscience from Stanford University. I then completed a postdoctoral fellowship in genetics at the University of California San Francisco. Part of what I loved in both undergraduate and graduate school was helping other students succeed. As an undergraduate, I tutored students in organic chemistry and loved the look on my students' faces when they finally "got" a concept. I also really enjoyed giving my students much needed confidence. Sometimes that's all they really needed! As a graduate student, I was a mentor to an undergraduate student. It was so rewarding to see her grow into a highly competent scientist. For the past three years I have been a volunteer tutor with the Healthy Cities tutoring program in San Carlos, CA, specializing in math and science. In my weekly sessions with students, I aided them with their homework and helped explain more general concepts. I also helped give them the confidence they needed to improve their skills. I always tried to explain how what they were learning related to the "real world" and ensure that my sessions had a dose of laughter! I welcome the opportunity to work with your student. Prior to our first session, it would be very helpful if you could let me know what textbook your student is using in the classroom as well as any other resources and suggestions that you might have. Hobbies
I have loved music since I was a small child, and currently sing in a choir and ring in a handbell choir. I enjoy going to see live music as well. I have also danced since I was a child and currently enjoy taking tap dance and line dance classes. Fiber arts are a more recent interest. I have become enamored with yarn and love to both knit and sew.
